I often get asked this question by clients, so I thought I’d put together a list of tips here for anyone wondering what to wear for their business head shot:
Depending on your industry, company culture, and the image you want to project, you may want to dress more or less formally. However these are some general rules to remember that can be helpful when you’re picking out what to wear on Head Shot Day at work 🙂
1) Simple and classic is always a great choice. Remember the focus for the business headshot is your face. Avoid busy, loud patterns, heavy/flashy jewelry or too many accessories that can be distracting and take the attention away from you.
2) Plain, solid colors are often your best choice. Choose mid-tone colours in blue, green, burgundy and purple because they are universally flattering, or else neutrals like grey, charcoal, navy, brown and maroon. Avoid wearing tops in flesh tones (cream, beige, pastels, peach or yellow) that can wash you out. Stark black and white on their own are not good choices because they can wreak havoc with the camera’s exposure or the studio backdrop. Instead, pair them with another color, or cover a white blouse or shirt with a darker jacket or blazer.
Darker clothes tend to work better because they put the emphasis and focus on your face, but if sky blue brings out your beautiful eyes, by all means wear it! You should wear a color that you feel best complements you, your coloring and your personal style.
*More specifically, for men, a dark business suit is a good choice. If you want a more casual look, you can forgo the blazer and wear a shirt and tie. For blazers, grey or navies in solid colors often work well. If you are wearing a tie, you can choose a bright color if you like, but keep the pattern simple. If you prefer not to wear a shirt and tie, your photo can still look nice and professional even in a collared golf shirt.
*For women, a classic business suit, dress or simple blouse and skirt or pants works best. Avoid complex patterns like stripes or checks and opt for solid colors wherever possible. Also try and avoid bulky fabrics, sweaters, turtle necks, big scarves or flashy jewelry that creates glare.
Makeup and hair should be kept simple and natural. If you don’t usually wear makeup, you might want to wear a little for you headshot to achieve a more polished look. For hair, a little hairspray can be good for flyaways.
The most important wardrobe tip is to wear something you like, that makes you feel good! Confidence, polish and a warm smile are the key ingredients to a great headshot 🙂
